HI: Some counsel and advice please. I have been looking at the Honda Handi EU3000i and the Yamaha  2400ishc.Ouch

We want to be able to start and run the 13.5 ac units in an R Pod 178.  I like the Yamaha as it has the High Current feature which I assume will be enough to start the 13.5.  The Honda has a negative of only 1.5 gal tank although you can add the extra tank accessory to fed it . Weight is important as we both have back issues. Both have the 3 year warranty and a local dealer sells both.

Anyone actually used the Yamaha 2400ishc with a 13.5 ac and same for the Honda Handi EU3000i and what has been your experience.

Many thanks  John

There are a few threads on this topic. One impaticular that speaks to the technical side. I found before, but it was really informative. I dont run one so I'm no help, but search for that thread!

I have the Honda EU2000i and companion. I have the cap that pulls fuel from an outboard motor tank.

I normally don't need the companion. The Honda 2000 will start my AC (13,500 BTU).

It will not run the AC and Microwave at same time, but it does all lights as I have converted all interior lights to LED.

Honda is better than Yamaha. Honda has a fuel pump, Yamaha does not.

I have the Yamaha 2400ishc and have been very happy with it.  It runs the AC fine -- but not while running the microwave or convection oven.  It runs at least 11 hours with low load.  If you need to run the air con all night it might not make it, but it's always run longer than I needed it to before I had to fill it with gas.  Always starts on the first pull.  I wanted one unit that had more than 2000 watts and I didn't want to pay for the Honda 3000.  I have no experience with Honda generators -- I'm sure they're great, but I'd get another Yamaha anytime.

We used our EF2400is (not the newer isHC) this summer, running our A/C fairly cool, and it always lasted exactly 8 hours.  This includes charging phones, computers, running the lights via the converter.  Before this summer's trip I plan on adding an extended tank that will gravity-feed it from above (since it doesn't have the fuel pump).

Mine is black (Dometic LS 3000).  I noticed that Ryobi has a new green inverter that also shows promise but I have not seen any reviews of it.

The Dometic runs the air conditioner, but not when it is in economy mode.

Saw this site from Pinellas Power Products  for an extended run tank for the Yamaha EF 2400iSHC and it is NOT a gravity feed. Looks promising...anyone tried it?

I know, I know. Blue or red, ya can't really go wrong. I'm just sitting here recovering from this damn rotator cuff surgery and have nothin' better to do than give you a hard time and watch football. Kinda dank and cold around here now, huh, Moe?

I watched the install video on Penellas site for the Yamaha external fuel.  Looks simple but I am sure that it will void the Yamaha 3 year warranty...possibly something to think about after 3 years.

yeah I saw that thing, very expensive for a fuel pump, fuel level switch and some tubing.  It does NOT come with a tank.  That's why I figured I'd make my own.  I would also always be worried about the switch sticking on and overflowing fuel everywhere.

Way beyond my price point for the convenience of not having to top of the generator as often.  I didn't have the patience to watch the guy show shoulders on screws for half an hour, but if, as Techntrek implies, the thing ain't absolutely foolproof, you gotta be kidding me!  Why spend $249 on something that might pump gasoline all over the campground?

This guy does not make any of the parts he just puts together the kits.

Pulse fuel pump. $11.45
http://www.amazon.com/Stens-520-590-Replaces-Stratton-49040-7001/dp/B001OK4G50/ref=pd_sim_sbs_auto_8 - http://www.amazon.com/Stens-520-590-Replaces-Stratton-49040-7001/dp/B001OK4G50/ref=pd_sim_sbs_auto_8

Fuel Filter  $5.37
http://www.amazon.com/Stens-Replaces-AM116304-149-2206-01-21541500/dp/B000VYNFRA/ref=pd_sim_lg_2 - http://www.amazon.com/Stens-Replaces-AM116304-149-2206-01-21541500/dp/B000VYNFRA/ref=pd_sim_lg_2

25 inches of fuel line with 4 spring hose clamps. Not as fancy and the crimp plastic but the same as original equipment.  $8.97 Probobly need two of these for $17.94.
http://www.amazon.com/Briggs-Stratton-25-Inch-Clamps-5414K/dp/B0012VY0Z2/ref=pd_sim_lg_5 - http://www.amazon.com/Briggs-Stratton-25-Inch-Clamps-5414K/dp/B0012VY0Z2/ref=pd_sim_lg_5

The hardest part to find was the 1/4 inch check valve that he used to replace the PCV Valve. I found this for $6.97
http://www.coleparmer.com/buy/product/45447-pp-miniature-check-valve-1-4-hose-barb-viton-diaphragm.html - http://www.coleparmer.com/buy/product/45447-pp-miniature-check-valve-1-4-hose-barb-viton-diaphragm.html

The fuel connection that he installed was a connection for an outboard motor. $9.99
http://www.amazon.com/Moeller-Marine-Fuel-Connector-Yamaha/dp/B000MTCR6E/ref=sr_1_63?ie=UTF8&qid=1388435226&sr=8-63&keywords=1%2F4+fuel+line+fittings - http://www.amazon.com/Moeller-Marine-Fuel-Connector-Yamaha/dp/B000MTCR6E/ref=sr_1_63?ie=UTF8&qid=1388435226&sr=8-63&keywords=1%2F4+fuel+line+fittings

This is the connector to change the 1/4 OD for the fuel connector to 1/4 inch barbed and mount the fuel connnector this one is brass for$2.50. the one he used was nylon.
http://www.amazon.com/Hose-Female-Tubing-Fitting-Connector/dp/B007QU3JM8/ref=sr_1_96?ie=UTF8&qid=1388435377&sr=8-96&keywords=1%2F4+fuel+line+fittings - http://www.amazon.com/Hose-Female-Tubing-Fitting-Connector/dp/B007QU3JM8/ref=sr_1_96?ie=UTF8&qid=1388435377&sr=8-96&keywords=1%2F4+fuel+line+fittings

And Brass T's at $3.38 each I think yoiu needed 2 for $6.76.
http://www.amazon.com/Union-Fitting-Intersection-Split-Brass/dp/B007ZCQ6JU/ref=sr_1_23?ie=UTF8&qid=1388435747&sr=8-23&keywords=1%2F4+fuel+line+t - http://www.amazon.com/Union-Fitting-Intersection-Split-Brass/dp/B007ZCQ6JU/ref=sr_1_23?ie=UTF8&qid=1388435747&sr=8-23&keywords=1%2F4+fuel+line+t

I think that is just about it for $60.98 if my math is good. If I looked around at other vendors I can problobly beat the Amazon prices that I have quoted. You could do this mod for a lot less than his kit costs.

Edit. You would have to add the fuel line and tanks but you have to for his kit as well. I might do this on my Generator because I hate pouring gas into it.

That is cool if you already have the Blue one. But, why pay $250 more to not have the read one with built in fuel pump?

Or has this turned into a Red state vs Blue State issue... ?

Impressive research Sean.  Still more than it's worth to me, but that's just me.  Even at $250 though it's still cheaper to get a Yamaha 2400ishc and add the pump than buy a Honda EU3000i.  Not that extra 600 watts wouldn't be nice.  They're both good names and both good products.  The choice is in the details and which features are worth the cost to you.

We could throw in yellow. I bought a Champion 3500-4000 watt unit at
Camper World. Has an extended run tank and has quiet run exhaust. Around $350 when I bought it. Have used it several times, has done well.

I second that.  My Champion is in my opinion a good deal for the much reduced price.  And it has the output to run the entire pod without question.

Me Three I have a champion and I might do the fuel pump mod on mine as it is a gravity feed as well and I would love to refill without pouring gas.

Edit (add Picture)

Here is a picture of my Champion mounted on the tounge of my POD. I got a cover for it shortly after this picture was taken. This will run any two items. I will run Air and Microwave for instance but if my wife turns on her Hair Dryer it will stall the Generator.

Great post.  With that much markup he should include the tank and fuel line!

My only worry with getting a gravity-fed addition to work is the factory tank is sealed, with emission-prevention stuff added on (some kind of canister and lines running to the carb from what I've read).  This must feed fumes into the engine like cars do, while allowing air into the top of the tank so it doesn't become vacuum locked.  I'll have to either completely bypass that system so both tanks are open to the air at the top, or seal the 2nd tank and extend the emissions control system over to that tank, too.

Yeah mine is not that complicated. I only knew about this mod because it is very like the mod you have to do to a Honda engine for a Go Cart. In Go Carts you want to get the gas back low so you need a fuel pump. This is one of the ways to add a fuel pump. The only addition to that mode is the Marine fuel tank and quick disconect. The only think I would do differently than he did was I would screww a brass 1/4 inch nipple to the valve cover rather that just sticking the hose through the hole in the valve cover.

I want to try this mod on our Champion generator. I found a complete list of parts like the guy from pinellas power products for about 1/4 of what he is charging. The PCV valve has me stumped. Tube, tee, tube then check valve. Is there a right or wrong way to put the check valve into the end of the tube. Hopefully this post finds you. Thanks

Ok I know you guys are going to beat me up but harbor frieght has one called the predator 3500. it has electric start, eco mode and runs just as loud as the Honda. I picked one up Friday for $649. Also come with a rv plug. Runs the ac like a champ. Lots of youtube video on them.

I have a Honda 2000 that's well over ten years old. It starts and runs either the AC or convection oven from eco mode without a problem, but won't run both at the same time.

For extra run time look at the dirt bike auxiliary fuel tanks that mount on the front number plate. They basically double the capacity of the little honda and simply siphon fuel into it as needed.
