Anyone else take a gas or electric smoker with them camping? My wife received one last year as a anniversary present at work(35 years). It is a Camp Chef propane fired smoker. We hauled it camping once last year & drove the neighbors crazy with the pork tenderloin, ribs & bacon that we smoked on Saturday afternoon. Upon getting our 178, I will be checking to see if it will sit in the pod comfortably & checking to see what I need to do to provide a port from the pod propane tank, to the smoker. We eat good when we camp....Its all about the food.

We have/had? a Cameron stovetop smoker and I tried using it once or twice for chicken and ribs.  Basically I forgot to open it up outside when the cooking was done because our old place didn't have a stove top vent and set the smoke alarms off. Tongue um...oops.  G got upset and ran around pulling the batteries and the dog got very excited and tried to trip both of us up as many times and she could.

The chicken and ribs were good and I like how it works with any heat source.  Plus it's only the size of a 9 x 13 pan so the amount is perfect for the both of us plus a bit of leftovers.

I may get another one as I'm not sure if it's one of the things Sandy took.  If your main unit is too big, the Cameron Stovetop Smoker would be a good size as a grill accessory for the pod.

Ooh, now your talking a passion of mine! Pastrami Katz Deli style from amazingribs.com, Ribs Meathead style (amazingribs.com), Pulled Pork Alton Brown Style, and smoked chicken Alex Jones style I love torturing family with pictures and neighbors with smell!

My setup w/Smokenator 1000 and Weber Performer would be a bit much to take camping, but I do smoke ahead of time and reheat when we get where we're going. My smoking sessions with brining and prep and smoke time usually take a day or two for chicken and pork and up to two weeks for pastrami.

Recently I tried a Crock Pot pulled pork recipe. A crock pot will easily run off a small inverter on the back seat floor of my TV. Imagine arriving at campsite after a long day of driving and the pulled pork is ready to serve! It actually turned out pretty good, but I decided the aroma of it cooking in my car would be wayy too distracting.

Here's some torture pics from a few smoking sessions on the back patio using hardwood charcoal, cherry and/or apple wood smoke...

It's really good stuff Leo. Around here we call those pictures...food porn.

I have to say I have had great coaches in Alton Brown (food network) and Meathead Goldwyn from amazingribs.com.

Looks yummy.  Anyone have a Big Green Egg? We were thinking of getting a XS for the pod but were advised to get a S by the eggforum.  Then we found out how much they weigh so we've been holding off.

Hi g4royce,

I don't have an egg, but have heard good things about them. I opted for a Weber Q 2200 for podding:
http://www.amazon.com/Weber-54060001-Liquid-Propane-Grill/dp/B00FDOON9C/ -
http://www.amazon.com/Weber-54060001-Liquid-Propane-Grill/dp/B00FDOON9C/ - http://www.amazon.com/Weber-54060001-Liquid-Propane-Grill/dp/B00FDOON9C/

I also bought a 6 foot propane extension hose and a 1 gallon refillable propane tank ($4.00/fill here):

http://www.amazon.com/Worthington-281149-1-Gallon-Cylinder-Prevention/dp/B000SKX63U/ - http://www.amazon.com/Worthington-281149-1-Gallon-Cylinder-Prevention/dp/B000SKX63U/

The grill w/cover and accessories fit nicely in a Home Depot plastic tub w/lid so there is very little, if any, odor in back of TV.

On a trip a couple of weeks ago I was convinced it was the right decision, roasting two whole chickens under the r-dome in a cold and driving rain.

We have a Brinkman smoker made of cast iron weighing about 600 lbs. Certainly not campable, if that is a word. I have been toying with the idea of a Rock Stoker Kit which maintains the temp with computer controlled fan. Finally broke down and ordered one yesterday. Making a batch of ribs today from the Neely's recipe. My next door neighbor also has the big Brinkman and he is smoking a brisket this afternoon. With the addition of the stoker kit, I won't have to baby sit the temperature of the smoker and will just have to add lump charcoal from time to time. Should be able to use the smoker more often. Salivating as I write this. Safe Travels.

No doubt. Certainly can smell the goodness when my neighbor fires his up. Yesterdays ribs came out fine and five of us almost consumed three racks of ribs and half a brisket. MMMM good. Well now awaiting the Rock Stoker kit. Will advise. Safe Travels.

We love our Traeger pellet smoker- they make a PTG(portable tabletop grill), it's a legless tailgate model that has about a 12"x15" grill area. We've had a Lil Tex model for years. so when we got our rpod 179 we ordered one.  Seems to work well- we love slow cooking chicken for a deep smoke ring. 190*F for hours until the internal temp on the thickest pieces reaches 170*F.  But I'll be the first to admit these grills require electricity & pellets.  So they do need more than an open fire wood require.  And I do love simplicity.

I modified my weber "go anywhere" BBQ,  to either BBQ higher temps or smoke at lower than normal temps for this unit, I installed a LP flow control just before the BBQ's LP main adjustment, that way I can get the heat low enough for my liking when smoking. I usually like to maintain around 180- 200 degrees when smoking. so I will put my wood chips in get it hot enough to get the chips going then put in the food turn down the temp and close it up.  I have several larger smokers at home and most of the time factory smokers cook WAY TO HOT and fast so I have added the same flow control to all of my smokers so that I can get the lower temps, and Not dry out the meat by cooking to fast, I will use a water pan or wet the chip some time but at 180-200 degrees Not much liquid is really needed.

I have two LP tank setup on my pod so I unhook one tank and install a hose on to it and other end to BBQ and I'm ready to BBQ as I don't like those small throw away tanks, less to take with me.

some of the best tasting smoked meats I have had was made by a guy that cheated, he pressure cooked the meat to make it very tender, and reduce the cook time then finished it off with smoke, I couldn't tell by the taste but looking at the meat  the depth of smoke rings wasn't there

Westgl, can you post a picture of your go anywhere BBQ?  I'd like to do that... don't know what a LP flow control looks like.   What is the setup for the smoking wood?

Here's where I do any smoking I do Tongue  This picture was from when I was still building it, but you get the idea.  It took some time to figure out how to drive the oven, but I can be pretty accurate with my temperatures now.  Smoking is always best after a night of pizzas because I can just use stored heat and then add smoke.  Great, now I'm hungry!

We have a Green Mountain smoker, Dave Crocket.  Loved it when we had our 35’ fifth wheel.  Taken it with our new Rpod.  Great to smoke thick sliced bacon, ribs, chicken etc.  we also smoke pizza and cook steaks on it. It can be either 12v or 110. Highly recommended!

All you do is buy a dual mount tank holder, remove the factory single mount rack, mount the dual tank rack. You can use the single tank regulator you already have, and switch the feed as needed, or switch out the regulator for a dual feed, with or without automatic switch over.

The hardest part is grinding off the single tank holder.  It was welded on to my pod.  It's not hard, but the rest of the set up is just hooking things up.  My dual tank holder is bolted on.  I've had the automatic switch-over for a few years now and it works great.  I forget how it works, actually.  It just does.  I have a different switch-over valve than Furpod, but otherwise my set up looks identical.

We take our Weber 22" grill. I have learned from others how to slow smoke meat with it. It uses charcoal briquettes.

I know this is an old post, but how do you transport your Kettle. I would love to pack mine along, but I tow with an SUV. Would love to take my Weber Smokey Mountain, but I think that may be too much hassle.

Kettle are the most bang for your buck. I can cook anything on it. Slow and Sear is also a nice addition to the grill.

Even with my pickup it was a bit of a hassle. I bought the 18” Weber. The 22” was more than I needed. Just easier to clean. I found the 18” works just fine. I can still smoke meat. It fits easily in the bed of my truck standing up. It is not a tall grill. I set it on the end of the picnic table to grill.

When I pulled with my Unlimited Jeep I had to lay the seat down to take the 22” grill. It is tall. Just had to make sure I got all the ash out or it ended up in the Jeep. Can you lay your seats down in your SUV? That would be the only thing I know of. Not sure it will go through the door of Pod.

Sorry that’s not a lot of help.

2 years now with our GMG Davy Crockett.. Best cooking device ever for camping. We have smoked, roasted, grilled and baked. Set it on the dinette bench in it's carrying bag no problem. We now use a DeWalt storage box with the bigger truck.

Added a Camp Chef Everest stove to the traveling cooking toolbox this year. Very happy with it. Pic is from P.E.I a couple of weeks ago (New Glasgow Highlands). P.E.I. cobblers, couple of pounds of steamer clams and some bacon wrapped filets. Camping is hard!
