Hi from Bainbridge Island, WA.

I have been reading a lot on this forum. Our family has been camping for 20 years using a tent trailer. We are now down to just two of us and setting up and taking down the tent trailer is a pain. We have decided on a Rpod 177. I am going to primarily tow with a Land Rover Discovery. I have a TDR truck but like the smaller Discovery for vacations. The Discovery should do fine with a tow capacity of 5500 LBS.

My main question is price. I want to pay a fair price for the Rpod. We are going to purchase a new one. The dealer in my area is always having sales. The price varies from list to sale price this weekend. It is always going up in a week. I know it is a sale pitch, I just want to know the lowest fair price. I don't like dealing.

I can go out of state (next state over) and buy from a dealer who offers a life time warranty with yearly inspection. I have not received a quote from him yet. He is waiting for the new 2014 1/2 to come in, which he says will be higher in price. We want one of those because the entertainment center has been moved from above the bed.

I have even talked to one dealer about picking the Rpod up at the factory in The Dalles, OR. He said it was possible, I wouldn't have the instruction on how to use it from them and they would not be able to do their prep work. The systems on the Rpod and my tent trailer are pretty much the same and I am very familiar with boat systems. I know I would do fine without instructions.

As for price. Is it allowed on this site to post prices and get opinions on the range? Good or not so good of a deal. I don't think I will post the names of the dealers. What is Forest River opinion? I know they say to buy locally, but that really limits competition on price. I hate dealership negotiations.

Help me find the right price for our new Rpod. We want a Rpod 177, Hood River Edition, Crown Package and some other things. Any suggestions?

It seems to appear to me that the West Coast is generally higher priced than the East Coast. If you wanted to travel far I think you could get a better price than in Washington. I have learned to be patient and take the time to look and shop. There are a lot of dealers selling r-pods on the internet. My guess a fair price would be about $15,000, from what I have read from members on this forum.

I have seen people pay from the low 13's to the high 19's for 177's. Agreed west coast dealers always seem higher. Some west coasters have made the drive to the midwest. It seems the eastern dealers are more price competitive. Our dealer (and others) put their prices on-line, or will email them to you.. But of course, you have to add in the cost of driving out and back, and the pain of taking a week long camping vacation.. lol.

We did tour the plant in Dalles, OR before we took delivery or our 171. In fact we saw it on the last day before they checked it over and sent it to the dealer. In chatting with the pall plant manager, he mentioned that a lot of the components are made in the mid-west and then shipped to Oregon for final assembly. Also, all of the units built in the West Coast are Hood River editions, which include the protective plate on the front of the trailer, the lifts that make the trailer higher and the aluminum wheels and tires, which account for the higher pricing. To negotiate a better price, contact Couch's and have them email a price. Show that to your dealer. Should get you better pricing from your local dealer. If not head for the next dealer. Like auto sales, dealers are loath to lose a sale. Good luck. Safe Travels.

Blue Dog RV in Post Falls, ID, have impressed me. Look at the Dealer Review section, there are comments about them. Just across the stateline past Spokane. I have a contact for them, send me a message and we can discuss. Seems that they discount several thousand over our Local dealer.

We bought our RP 175 locally at Poulsbo R/V in the spring of 2010. At that time all Pods were shipped in from the east and there were no other local Pod sellers. I see ads from Poulsbo R/V that indicate they're still in the Pod business. Poulsbo R/V is a big time old school R/V dealer. If you don't like to deal, then they will make sure that you take it in the shorts. If you don't mind dickering with them, then you can bring their asking price down some. Like all old school auto and R/V dealers you will be inundated with many offers of useless extras when you sit down to sign. Be prepared if you walk through their doors. Not a terrible company at all, just how a lot of those big dealers work.

Welcome.  My usual story that others have read here before - my local dealer listed our 171 for $18k, after negotiations wouldn't go below about $14k.  I then pulled out my quote from Couch's and he came within a few hundred bucks on the spot.  I paid about $12500.

No worries about mentioning dealers and prices, one of our founding principles here is open communication.

When I saw the Couch's RV listing today, I went to their website.  For some reason I thought they were in Portland, OR, nope, Ohio.  The had a really good price on a 178, but listed they wouldn't list the real price.  So I filled out the paperwork, not much and I immediately received a price in my email.  The price was $13,670 picked up in Ohio. In 10 minutes their was followup email from a sales guy.  I let him know I was a bit too far away.  He replied within 2 minutes that he would ship it.  I responded with my zip code and the shipping was $3200.  Their website clearly state they are a wholesale distributer.  Their prices are great if you don't have to drive3/4's the way across the country.
But the $13,670 is definitely the price I will start dickering with when I buy our 178 this summer.

You can use Couch's price to bargain, but you can also buy from them. Since you're already familiar with campers and their systems, you don't need a dealer to walk you around and tell you how the hot water heater works. And if you have a question, you just post it on the forum and get (10) answers in minutes. Even better than a dealer.

We found Couch to be professional, courteous, and they delivered it on time to our driveway. Saved thousands over the local dealer. Warranty work was done by another local FR dealer - no hassles or questions asked.

Conclusion: don't be afraid to buy online.

I've been told that summer is actually a good time, people usually buy to use them during the summer and are out camping during that period and not buying RVs.
The best time to buy is when you are able to, right now's not the right time for me.  It will be during the summer.  So July/August will have to work for me.Wink

Thanks for all the replies...

I did get a quote from Couch's. I am glad I was sitting down. Although the Rpod 177 was not a Hood River Edition, it had everything we wanted and more, $13,360.

Now I am wandering if I can buy it from them and get factory delivery at The Dalles factory. I understand that the Hood River Edition is only available at that factory.

I got your PM Boomertype and I will be in touch.

10-4 on the right time, we were looking last may at new one at the local FR dealer and they were the one that told us that and they wouldn't budge on a new r pod so we bought a used one from private owner. Good luck, maybe see you at the NW round up in charleston Or

That means that for less than $800 in gas money, you can save $3-5000 on a pod, AND get to throw in a cross country vacation to boot.

This is assuming you get 15 or so mpg on the way out an 10 or so coming back.. (have no clue what you are going to tow with.)

I got an email from Couch's today and they said they don't do factory delivery. Because they are a mid west dealer they can't get the Hood River Edition. They also stated that the Rpod must come to the selling dealer for a PDI to activate the warranty. PDI = pre or post dealer inspection?

Is it even possible to do a factory delivery? Has anyone ever done one?

Thanks for all the information. Smile

$16,900 was the best price I could get in Upland CA on a 178 from the excessively up-tight sales lady.

Would not budge an inch on the “price today” despite wanting to also get the R-Dome, batteries, LP Tank, and other randoms that go with a first purchase.

Upland CA and Temecula RPOD dealers are the same owner, btw.

Found on on RVTrader.com all setup and ready to go for $15,000 - Felt like both sides did well enough on this price.  This statement assumes I could not go pick one up in Texas and hadn't the imagination to think of having it shipped to me.  (Dammit!)

Good Luck.

I will be picking up our new 177 Rpod on Saturday. I probably pay a little to much, but we got everything we wanted. All the whistles and bells except for the Rdome and bike rack. It also comes with two batteries and a full tank of propane.

We did not want the Rdome yet. I want to see if I would really use it or would it just be stored. Our tent trailer has a awning which rides everywhere the trailer goes and I have set it up maybe twice. I may work on making some kind of Rpod awning. I am just not sure about needing a room. As far as the bike rack I can easily weld one up.

Lydia at Blue Dog RV was great and we will meet her on Saturday. She did not push me at all. Just gave me the information I wanted. There is no factory pick up, so that answers that question.

I know, bottom line. Lydia priced the 177 at $15,400. I offered $14,500. They said sold the next day. I probably could have gone lower, but they need to make a living too. I was hoping to get below 15K.

I will let you know how the delivery works out.

Thanks,

Cary Thumbs Up

I recommend Blue dog RV very highly.  I purchased my 177 at their Post Falls, Id. location, but they have other locations that are probably closer to you.  Kennewick has one, and Portland.  Check their web site. You will only find new Hood Rivers at dealers in the western states.  Good luck!

I'm in Seattle and bought my r Pod last year. I searched craigslist and found a big variety in prices between new and used. The local dealer P......o RV had the highest prices of all. I started prices shopping for new and found the best prices in Oregon and Idaho. I was ready to spring on a loaded 170 in Oregon. It was $500 more but half the trip time. I emailed the sales person at Blue Dog RV in Post Falls, ID, and told them I was going to Oregon and within 10 minutes they called me and knocked $1000 off their last offer, so it ended up $1500 below the Oregon price. They also offered more options like dual batteries and an in store credit. I ended up paying $14,500. It was well worth one night in a motel in Spokane for this lower price.  We couldn't be more happy with the r Pod and are planning our next trip to Forks.

Agreed, however if you want a Hood River Edition - west coast factory, Couch's can't provide one.  They will deliver to the West coast for small $3200 Cry fee.
Using their prices to dicker may work against you if you are on the west coast, as you are not comparing apples to apples and your dealer knows how the HRE has more bells and whistles.  The HRE has bigger wheels, more of an off-road tire, risers, diamond plate in the wheel-wells and more.
If I was an east coaster, I'd drive there and get one if my dickering with their price at a local or semi-local dealer couldn't get me close.
I'm seeing people sharing prices here and working it with dealers and it seems to be working.  I think the price Capn'Cray was helped by the input of people here who shared prices.
Not a humble opinion, I'm not humble!Star

Offroad53, I just got a 178 Hood River  in San Diego, fully loaded cause thats just how our dealer ordered them, but came with TV, bluetooth/DVD stereo, indoor/outdoor speakers, convection microwave oven, AC, dual 6V batteries, weight distributing hitch, sway bar, Prodigy tow controller, everything installed, PDI, that crappy rv starter kit, and was out the door for $18,500 (sale price of 17990 + 500 in "accessories", "Free" PDI.

Could I have found it cheaper at a bigger dealer...after driving for hundreds of miles...probably.  However, there is something to be said about going to the same dealer 3 different times looking at different models of the R-pod and sitting in them, including the one you are getting to help make the decision.  Then, on delivery day, I was able to get out of work a little early, go thru all the paperwork, car setup and walk thrus and still be home same day for dinner.  That was worth the extra money to me...

Does anyone know what the Hood River Addition adds to the price. I am also in San Diego, dealer prices are high here compared to other areas of the country! Used prices when you can find one are also high in my opinion. I am looking for a 171, 177, or 178.

When I buy new cars it is easy, $500 over invoice and everyone is happy. I went to one R-Pod dealer and had a bad experience with salesman right from the start, was feeding me bull about weights and tow vehicles. I am limited to 3500lbs, so smaller lighter models are a must.

The dealer has to make money but it has to work for both parties.

Hi,

Try search rv trader for prices from other dealers.  Also, get a list of dealers in califonia from RPo and go to all of their websites.  As a general rile, 30 to 35 percent off MSRP is a good price assuming the dealer does not make add on to to MSRP for prep etc.  Some dealers phony up the MSRP.  Finally, prices  are high now because it is summer and in between model year so try to get a 2014.

I also live in. California.

If you are looking for new, have you thought of buying out of state? I would think most HRE go to the west coast. All HRE are made in Dallas, OR. Shipping one to the east coast would be costly. I bought my 177 in Idaho and it came with the HRE package (I wanted that). I saved thousand over my local dealer. I also did not like the pushy salesman.

It might be worth the drive and one hotel to buy out of state in Idaho. I did get a quote from Couch's RV in Ohio and they were the lowest. They are near the Ohio plant and I think they don't pay shipping.

My out of state purchase was great, no hassles. Thank of it as your break in trip. My pod was ready to go when we got there. It had two charged batteries, propane, and water. We slept in ours the first night

I found a 2013 177 used for $13,500 private party, has WDH, cover, looks to be like new. Comparing this model over the 171, cost and weight. Like the 178 a lot but heavy for my 3500lb capacity jeep wrangler unlimited.

Dan,
I had good luck with Bobby Combs...ask for Ray in El Cajon, he was an old retired guy, easy to work with, no pressure, which I also hate (PM me I have his Cell if he's not working). I like the 178HRE, if you have time to wait, you could get them to order what you want, not just what they have on the lot. I met Bobby Combs and as he put it, "if there is an option, I order it cause that's how people want them". So right now I'm sitting in Stewart, BC and haven't turned on the TV or AC...ever (in 4 months of owning it) and just used the microwave for the first time ever last night. I paid $18k with every option including the convection microwave, TV, etc. That was out the door with the WDH hitch, sway bar, dual 6V batteries and prodigy brake controller installed and PDI. Plus if I need something (warranty etc) its only El Cajon or Kearny Mesa, not somewhere far away or I'm not going in with a brand new rig I bought at some other dealer. I like I got to look at the exact unit I bought including the colors before I showed up. I took 3 trips looking and talking before I picked this one, so that makes a difference.

Sorry if I repeated stuff from an earlier post...don't have enough internet to go back thru...

BTW, SLIDE OUT!! Every time we are in without it out we remark how narrow it is...

Cheers,
Bobby

The Hood River Edition is worth every extra penny, especially if you camp in the mountains and need the extra clearance (as well as larger tires and rock guard).

ReiMan - I am not aware of what the Hood River package provides but I gather it includes the risers.  I DON'T have risers and I encourage you to get them, one way or another.  (after purchase from the factory the parts are $150)   The clearance on the Rpod is not what it needs to be.  adding 4" of clearance would be awesome.  I had to remove the factory installed sewer pipe storage unit because even sane driveways would pop the lid off it as it dragged across the ground.  My wife cringes as we approach Every driveway entrance.   :)    (for those reading along, Yes, my hitch height is correct.  Smile   )

Yes, Hood River for sure as I do go off the beaten path, desert roads. Larger tires and lift a real plus.

I can buy new 177 for 16,200 at a dealer, have not made and offer, just his rvtrader advertised price.

Or, used 177, not seen it with WDH, sway control, upgraded mattress, 2013. $13,500 500 mile round trip drive.

Or just saw a near new 2014, private party an 800 mile round trip, with R-dome asking $15,700 too much for me but have not made offer, thinking $14,000 is the most I would go. I do like the convenient solar port and better TV location on the 2014 over the 2013.

I will get the wirless prodigy brake controller. Thanks to all those taking the time to chime in.

Dan,

My quote from Couch's was $13,360. This was for a 177 with everything but the HRE, included the Rdome (I think). But it was in Ohio.

I bought a 177 HRE with everything but the Rdome from Blue Dog RV for $14,500. Drove to Idaho to pick it up. About 300+ miles. They do offer a life time warranty and two batteries.

My local dealer was at $18K something from $24K something and they were at their best. They wanted to deal with a Rdome or under coating or fabric coating. Salesman stuff. Star

The larger tire are the great. There are a lot more choices in trailer tires with 15 inch rims. I am still not sure if off road tire on the trailer are really that important, but they do look good. I don't think the trailer is going to power me out of something. I also wanted the new TV location.

I am originally from Poway. Smile

Hi,

Yeah and what is shipping cost , maybe $4000 plus, or how much does it cost to drive to pick it up.

large tires are an absolute for wash board roads.  in fact the RPOD is not rated for any off road except dirt road which is flat with few ruts or rocks.  The frame and construction won't handle the bouncing and the warranty will be voided.

Decide on the types of road you will use before

Larger navigate potholes are rocks better but the thickness of the tire prevents a lot of flat tires.   The typical trailer tire ghastly regular and. Instant flats on gravel roads.  It all depends on the roads you want to go on.  I spend winters in Mojave desert and they are a must

I go out to Ocotillo Wells. Dirt roads, understand the tires and lift will be well worth it. Also understand these trailers are not really off road ready. Typical rv construction.

Pricing examples help. HRE a must. So far used prices people are asking not much less than new. I understand supply and demand. Limited inventory on dealer lots drives up selling price during buying season. $14,500 is what I will offer a local dealer for a 177 based on Cap-N-Crays experience. All very helpful.

Couches has great pricing, but WAY too far away. I did discover that the Hood River Edition adds $543.75 to the retail cost. It includes diamond plate wheel wells and front, 15" tires, lift kit. With this and Couches pricing, and everyones help I am well informed to make an offer. Used or new I will report in when I have a deal. Leaning towards ordering a 171 with no tv ofr sure. I would like the prewiring but no crappy dvd player like they supply. The crwon package for the lousy entertainmnet center, speakers, adds $$870! Wow. The 19" TV I think another $350 and poor quality IMHO.

Crown Package no longer exists.
Most is now standard. Push button lock and gooseneck faucet are no longer.
I just got my 2015 build sheet, picking it up on Tuesday.

Congratulation Boomer. Have a safe trip to Post Falls.

I just got back from a trip to Nashville. Over 6K on the pod. Performed beautifully. Say Hi to Lydia.

Best price I could negotiate on a 2014 171 is $15,000 and I have to drive 425 miles one way to get it. Nobody close by comes close to Couches pricing. I will keep looking for used. I saw a used 171 private party asking the same price as new ones.

I found a barely used 2014 178 with Rdome for $14,500. Again,  not close by, have to drive 4 hours but with all I have seen out there seems to be a  decent and fair price. Less than a year old. Looks totally current, has all options except the green led / solar port. I like the 178 layout the best, just adds a bit of weight.

We got our brand new 2014 177 in the Hood River edition for $14,990 from Blue Dog RV in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. And since it came new from Blue Dog, they give you a lifetime warranty on virtually everything in the Pod. The only catch is you have to have an annual maintenance check done on the RV by a professional but not necessarily them. For me, that's very cheap insurance.
