I know that there are not a bunch of Awning options for the RPod outside of the R-Dome or making one yourself.   I am currently working with Paha Que Wilderness Camping Tents and Shelters and they are building me an awning  for the R-Pod.  I will be beta testing it once i receive it in about 30 days.  I will post pictures here once i have it up.  Once tested this will give R-Pod owners another option for awnings.   Paha Que Wilderness Camping Tents and Shelters currently has the visor for the R-Pods.   Can't wait to see how this turns out.

Options are good.  I like the dome, but it is not without its drawbacks.  Installation can be tedious especially using those suction clips, and they don't seal well.  But, it mostly keeps the bugs out and makes a good mud room.  I'm sure I'll get better at setting it up with more practice.  It would be nice if there were other aftermarket "dome" options out there though.  Can't wait to see the new product!

Just wondering, seeing how you are working on this, is it something that is permanently attached to the POD or will it have to be installed and removed when you move the POD. Just wondering. Goose

I will be removable.  A little like the R-Dome but less to it.   More of an open concept.

Hey Walt, is this a new offering or a version of the "visor" from Paha Que? Their "visor" has been out for some time, but had some problems. We worked with Mike almost all last summer to get it right. The length was the key, long enough to provide "cantilevered" support, with it's fiberglass rod, but short enough to be lightweight. See our pictures on page 3 of this thread:

This will be a new offering open concept.  It will be a cross between the TAB trailer awning and the Safari Trailer awning that are shown on there web page.  Link below.

Just curious... what model R-pod do you have? We also struggled with the visor last year due to the length... we have a 178. Excited to see what the awning looks like!

Sorry to change subject a little, but what have you guys done to stop the rail from tearing up the rdomes insert? When we slide the insert into the rail, it keeps shearing off some of the plastic. If I'm using the wrong words, I'm referring to the rail on the pod that the rdome connects to.
Has anyone smoothed the edges out? How?

RRL,   I have the RPod 178 with the 3in lifters for ground clearance.

kymooses,  I live in the south end of Louisville.

wingnut2312,  I have heard in other posts on here that people have rounded off the tips of the edges of the awning rail track with a file at the point where you insert the canvas into the awning rail.

It helps to use a pair of pliers to bend the corners of the track to flare them out on the end that you feed the awning into. And some have including myself have replaced the screws to give more clearance in the track when doing this stainless steel screws were used.

We will also spray a little bit of silicone in the track which helps the dome slide through a lot easier.

I bought a small 1/8 inch round bit for the Dremel Tool that I have to remove the burrs on the inside of the track were the screws are. You can not get a file on the inside and this worked perfect. Goose

Walt,

I'm looking forward to the pics.  A open design would be just the thing for us in the southwest as we really don't have bugs and it is ussually dry. More so for shade and that occasional thundercloud.

I ordered one for my 178. It did not work. After talking to Mike it was determined that the one they made was not suitable for that model (not long enough). Sent mine back on their authorization. As far as I can tell they do not make one for a 178.

We love the Dome, but thought an awning would be best for one-night trips and to let us take the Dome down to dry before storing.  As we all know, the R-pod awning market is nonexistent, so as we do frequently, we made it ourselves.  Purchased a clearance 7x12' piece of awning material ($70.00 including shipping).  The cord on the awing was not big enough around, so we bought a roll of soft clear plastic tubing and split it long-wise to fit over the awning's cord - glued it there.  This fits in the same track as the Dome.  Then purchased two replacement fiberglass tent poles with tension cord, cut them to fit into a seam that I sewed onto the other end of the awning.  Put in 3 grommets, bought aluminum extension tent poles and made straps to anchor with stakes to the ground at an angle.  The total costs for all parts was less than $125.00 and a little sewing time.  We will be bringing it to the Oregon Rally in September.

I did just the opposite.  I bent the ends in and filed them down.  I was having trouble with the R-dome coming out of the channel.  Anyone else have the trouble.

I have also used a dremel to smooth the entrance channel. This improved the install tremendously. My major issue was determining which side went up till I put it up three times and figured out that the rolled up shades go on the outside. It takes two of us, me on a traveling step ladder pulling the dome along and my wife feeding the dome through the channel. We have got it down to a science now and do appreciate the weather proofness it provides not withstanding the stupid suction cups which I have replaced with heavier duty ones, along with replacing the light duty stakes with "real" stakes.

I have a 2015 RP 179and purchased an awning from Paha Que. Picture attached

It was touch and go putting it up on my own for the first time, especially since it was windy that day, but overall, very happy with the product. The supports are a little snug to the rear entry door, but it sure beats sitting in the Florida sun.  I understand that some campground sites are too narrow for a full R Dome, and I also wanted an open feeling.

Where did you get those poles as an additional support? I have found that in windy conditions the strings alone will not support the awning and I have found the awning to sag down, or even have blown up onto the roof. Your solution looks great!

Has anyone looked at using a 7' or 8' pop up awning (Dometic RV Camper Trailer Pop up Trim Line)?  On our 179 it looks like there is 7 ' to 8' of straight track.  But will the awning flex enough to be installed on the curved part of the track is the question.  I think we are going to by one to try.  The price is right on e-bay $179.

Well, since the R-Dome is actually a 13' Dometic...  I would think it would be too small.

It would seem that you would order a canopy that was only wide enough for the straight part of the track.  That might work and provide a quick cover.  I have the R-dome and only put it up if I am going to be there a few days.

OK  So Im rackin my brain to remember the guy who had it featured on a post.  He was tailing about the irritating screws in the channel that got in his way.  It was a 9x9 (brand? i don't remember) from Walmart.  He is a bit of a metal fabricator and had pics of his rear plug in steel carrier that he made…….Im still looking for the post…… Seemed like the best deal I have seen so far.  And simple

I just returned the Rdome that came with the 179. Very difficult to set up. I like your idea and would really appreciate a photo of the adjustment you made to the side that slides into the Chanel .Does the awning material come stitched up on all four sides? Is there any other tips you are wiling to share? Where did you get the awning? Have you considered attaching mosquito netting ?

I have the new Phaq Que awning for Rpods (not the visor type but the one in the link above).

Just camped for five days and used the awning (great as it rained for one day).  The awning was simple to put up and take down but lots of luck trying to fit it back into the bag it came in.  I just folded it up nicely and stored it in the baggage compartment of the trailer (I have a new 178).

The new awning kept me really dry along with chairs, etc.  It got lots of looks from folks walking by.

They are currently working on a piece that attaches to the front which totally encloses the awning.

All in all a nice piece of work and really easy to put up just carry a small step ladder with you.

Cheers
Chiman
