Anyone out there considered removing the "sink" in the bathroom?  I have a 2015 179 and the bathroom sink is pretty useless.  The only thing it does well is take up space in an already cramped bathroom.  It appears to be a pretty easy uninstall.  Remove the sink and the drain fittings and then place a panel over the hole in the wall that is used by the drain plumbing.  I plan on leaving the faucet in the toilet in case we use the shower.  Thoughts?

Interested in responses and options. We have reserved a 2015 179 for August purchase as it is to hot to do much in SC in July and our new tow veh is in Port and set for delivery at end of June.
Bath is a big issue for both of us. I have braces on both legs and in and out is an issue ...plan to put a rail on the opposite side of the door if possible to navigate the step safely. any idea or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Wife Kris likes large bath as we came form a larger TV and an A.

John:
We love our 179.  We live in the Rockies and have used it a number of times since we took delivery in April.  It's easy to tow and feels bigger on the inside than it looks on the outside.  The long slide makes a real difference.  But the bathroom is an issue. I'm a big guy and it's tiny.  My wife is not a big guy, and it's a challenge for her to navigate as well.  We do a lot of dry camping, so we need a potty.  This one works, but is a challenge.  However, if I wanted more room in the bathroom, I could have purchased one of those boxy trailers that all look alike.  The other attributes of the Pod far outweigh the tiny bathroom.

One of the very first mods I did to my Pod 4 years ago.  You can contact Forest River and buy a piece of the wallboard to cover the large hole.

My main issue with the sink is my left knee, I'm 6'1",  hits the bottom of it.  Looking at it, I think I can remove the bottom piece, trim a couple of inches off the top, and remount it higher.
The reason for trimming the top is the trim line would be hidden and the bottom has a flange molded in that needs to stay for strength.
Really I would just have preferred to not even have it in there in the first place, as to me it is so small as to be near useless.

The original pods didn't have them, I couldn't imagine taking up the room when there is a larger sink 3 feet away.

A suggestion I've made here before is to open the bathroom up by making it how it is in popups.  Cut the walls down to roughly 1/4 to 1/3 of the full height, moving the shower faucet down, hanging the shower head from a ceiling bracket.  Put in a wrap-around curtain (in this case 3/4 around), roll it up to the ceiling when not in use.  It will make it feel much more open when not in use, and you won't knock your elbows on 3 sides while showering.

We recently removed the sink in our 2013 178 and also relocated the shower curtain track.  It is bendable and I extended out over the door- We keep the door open to shower.  It made a big difference. We're now thinking about changing the shower head to the Oxygenics one.  Haven't figured out how to post pictures but I have posted them on the FB group.

For pics, go to the full edit mode.  Either by pressing the Post Reply button to the bottom-left of the last post, or the arrow that points up-left just above the Quick Reply text box.  Once you are there look for the little tree, press that.

Carr-pod, please re-post. I don't know why we get occasional blank posts.

The thing that I like about the sink is that when you are adjusting the water temp for the shower, the cold(or hot) water isn't running on your feet. We used the bathroom exclusively while on our 18day trip. The 3 of us grew very used to it. Turning on an angle inside there while showering helps with roominess too.

In the interest of keeping the subject of the bathroom sink I would like to post an idea.  How hard would it be to relocate the sink above the toilet. You would have to keep it high enough so not to hit your shoulder on it while seated but it would give you more room to get up from a seated position and more room to stand while taking a shower.  The sink could still be used to place shampoo/conditioner, wet wash cloth etc. You could also place a foot on the toilet seat lid to scrub your toes.  Does anyone see a down side to this idea??

The wall behind the toilet in a 178 is loaded with electrical wires and houses the converter which is the hub for all the electrical circuits.  I don't think it is a good idea to contemplate  adding water lines in that area.  Then there is the problem of installing a drain to the grey water tank.  The sink must be mounted in a corner due to its design, and this could make the sink difficult to use since it would be behind the toilet.

I chose to simply remove the sink, order a wall repair panel from FR, and eliminated the sink entirely.  If (when) we decide to sell our pod, the sink can easily be re-installed in its original position with no evidence it was ever removed.

If you want to scrub your toes, just sit on the toilet as most of us do.

Thanks for the response Sleepless. You are probably correct concerning introducing a potential leaking sink & drain above the power panel. What was I thinking? :)

Remove Sink, remove pipes, cap pipe, add wallboard, seal around wallboard.

Hello Kymoose,

What are you capping, besides the drain pipe? Or, what else did you circle there that looks capped?

You left your faucet with hot/cold attached, correct? I've imagined that the drain would be all I'd have to cap, and it appears in the photo that the hot/cold lines are still there and running up to, I presume since I can't see it the photo, the still-intact faucet and shower line. But I'm stumped by the other two lines I see in the photo.

I hate to make you spell this out, but I want to make sure I'm prepared when I go into this mod.

Thanks

You only cap the drain pipe that's it.  That is just a different picture I have to show a different procedure done in the sink area.  So you'll just take off the p-trap and then you'll cap just the drain pipe that will then be just inside the wall.

Just FYI the other lines you see are the black tank flush mechanisms which are behind your sink.

Travis, just a minor point for some of the newer models, including the 178.   When I removed my sink, I left the p-trap in place and capped it.  You can then swing the p-trap into the wall recess.  Be sure to tighten the nut attaching the p-trap to the drain line.  I chose this route to simplify the process should I decide to sell my pod and re-install the sink.  This way there are no parts that may be misplaced over time.

Ahh, that's actually a good point.  I'm not the type to keep things like that.  Threw the sink away when I removed that, threw the stove away when I removed it.  But, I also know that I'll never be selling our Pod as well so that makes it a much easier decision that way.

But yes, sliding it in like that is a great idea!!
