Subject: 2015 RP-178 Shelf Over Bed w/ Baskets Mod
Date Posted: 17 Nov 2014 at 2:54pm
On our last trip we tried out the ole shelf over the bed with baskets mod so many other podders have done. Cost was about $110.00. It offers plenty of room for 4 real nice sized baskets to hold clothes and access is very user friendly. I will say that the mod is probably at least a 5 out of 10 for level of difficulty. Like many others, we found the perfect shelf at Lowes, the finish basically matches the bathroom door perfectly. The baskets were a little harder to find but we got lucky at Michael's with a 50% off sale. WARNING to people who do not normally buy baskets...prepare for sticker shock! Good baskets are expensive! No more digging in duffles for socks for us! YAY!

Is the shelf you found solid or not?  do you have a part number from Lowes?  How does one attach it to the walls?  I just got my rpod so if this has been discussed, sorry, or send me reference.

Thanks

This post has a little more information about the mod:  http://www.rpodnation.com/topic3757_post39218.html - 177 MODS

I used 3" L brackets. The shelf is part of a closet storage system, sorry...I don't know the part number. The trick was finding the right location for the shelf vs the type of baskets to be used.

I'm real happy with the way it looks and the functionality. It's like having the space equivalent of a small 4 drawer dresser.

Cliff: Outstanding! Hope you won't mind if I shamelessly copy your good idea! And Lowe's, BTW, has a decent selection of baskets. We're leaning toward wicker-styled plastic ones rather than the actual wicker.  I'm a little concerned that the real wicker might snag my "dainty unmentionables". LOL

And John in Idaho:  Here's a link to a Roth & Allen shelf at Lowe's that sure looks like Podster's.  Hope it helps.  The shelf is 6' long.  The width of our Pods is ~6'2". So, it looks like it could get some support from the window valance plus additional from the 3" L-brackets Podster mentioned.  I'm thinking some 1x4" cedar (or whatever) might make a good shim at each end.  Would mean a little less weight on the valances.  Anyway, I'm thinking out loud. Sorry.

That's a relief! You can't imagine what wicker splinters in your shorts will do.

I meant to ask: Did you position the shelf so that it's up against the sloped wall? Or would that rob too much shelf space? But .. being up against the wall would allow a couple of the wall clips - or a rail - to be used for mid-span support.  What to do, what to do??

The baskets fit perfectly onto the width of the shelf, sitting inside the given channel to keep them from shifting. The shelf has to be forward of the rear roof to allow for clearance of the back of the baskets.
I positioned the shelf just far enough back to allow the baskets to clear the sloping roof. Admittedly, it's light duty but should be fine. If it fails, I will extend the length of the self to the full 74" (well 73.5") and install a rail for it to sit on. We travel with the baskets loaded sitting on the bed and when we camp, we place them on the shelf.

I found the wicker baskets at Lowe's to be very "sheddy" and ruled them out because I didn't want to load the bed with sticky itchy wicker wickets.

Hello Podster,

I have the 176 and that looks like the same amount of room over the bed/dining in mine. Question: I purchased that shelf and am trying to decide how far back to place it. Trying to decide whether to leave it open above your head while watching tv or not? How many inches from the slope of the wall did you leave? Thanks so much.

Howdy Podgirl!

I don't know how many inches it is and my POD has been put away in storage for the winter, so it may be later that I can measure, maybe this weekend. That said, I really think the best thing you can do is place the shelf, temporarily, into position so you can try different angles and uses before you commit to a perm install. This is where all the real work is...take some time and figure out a way to support the shelf with shims, tape, blocks, whatever you can to keep it into position so you can give it a spin so you can experience the cause and effect of the mounting position, to include how it will be mounted. Load with whatever you will use it for, baskets, clothes, towels. If needed simulate this by using cardboard to lighten the load while testing. Once you get it into position check the views and head clearances and adjust accordingly. This can be a bit time consuming and a little frustrating, but worth it in the end. Smile

Since the shelf was installed away from the roof line to allow for the insertion of the baskets - where were the L brackets installed?

Hello again Podster,

You are right my friend. I currently have it resting on top of the cornice boards. I'm going to try and see if Michaels still has those baskets. I like my pod, just got to get some organization. Thanks for your reply and wishing you and family a happy Thanksgiving!

I removed the valence and the top of the sliding blind (cornice board?) so I could place front L bracket behind the metal part of the blind, it is also resting on top of the aluminum frame of the window. The metal part of the blind is re-installed over the L bracket. The back L bracket is lower because I wanted to have a slight angle down in back to help keep them in place.

The location is ideal for me because my baskets clear but don't touch the rear roof wall and when standing next to the bed the shelf sits back far enough to not be an issue. Also, no problem getting into our out of bed, even crawling over. Dropping the rear some helped me get the clearance I wanted without having to move the shelf forward.

Getting the valence off and back on is kinda tricky, Good luck Sir!

So how do you get the blind cover thing off?  I looked at it & it seems it is held on with screws to the brackets, is this right?  Most house blinds are held on with clip things.  Thanks!

Blind cover thing? For clarity, if you are referring to the box shaped fabric covered window decoration on top, I refer to that as a "Valance" some folks call it a "Cornice Board." This item is kinda tricky to remove. The only thing holding the valance in place is a screw through the fabric directly to the sidewall.  Its attached by wood screws that have been driven directly through the fabric which then hides the heads of the screws. Often times the screw is placed within the 45º fold of the fabric on top. There are other screws below that are driven into and between the folds of the fabric that just disappear. It's definitely not a remove and re-install friendly item by any means, but, it can be done.

I don't know and my POD is off-site at secure storage. I think there is a link on this thread that has a description, but I'm not sure if it includes measurements. I picked the ready made shelf from Lowe's because it's the perfect size, lightweight, and matches well with the interior of the POD. Several other POD owners, before me, have used the same shelf for the same mod. Good luck!

EDIT:  Just found the link the LUV2Q posted on this same thread that will take you to the source. The shelf is 72" wide and 16" deep.

Hi All,

I'm new to this group, new pod owner and loved this idea, but wasn't crazy about putting holes in my brand new 178.  So, I came up with a different approach to mounting a 72" shelf across a ~74 1/4" space.  I used 3M Extreme Mounting Tape - outdoor rated to 80lbs.

First I purchased a 1x2" and cut 3 pieces to the 16" width as the shelf I purchased at Lowes.  The way the math worked for me was I needed 74 1/4"  across the back of the pod and each 1x2 is actually 3/4" inch wide, so three of them = the 2 1/4" I needed + 72" of the shelf = 74 1/4".  Two on one side and one on the other.  Well my pod is just a smidgeon wider and I wanted to keep slight positive pressure on the mounting tape so everything was snug.  So, I cut a paint stirring stick and shimmed the gap.  I tested the fit by laying everything on top of the valences.  Satisfied with the fit, I stained the boards with some left-over stain that was close enough to the color of the shelf, didn't matter to me because I'm color blind Smile, but the wife said "close enough".

I screwed a 1x3 to each side with 3" L brackets - making sure to pre-drill in the shelf so I didn't split the wood.  Then I removed a board from one side, leaving the L bracket ready to remount to that board when I installed it.

I then measure the distance to the back of the pod, so that the baskets fit snug against the front lip of the shelf and stuck the boards (the undrilled one + the one i previously mounted to L bracket) against the wall right over the valences with the two sided mounting tape.

Then I mounted the shelf, with the L bracket to one side, on the other I used 4 1 1/4" dry wall screws to screw the two 1x3 boards together.  Tested everything - put up the 4 perfect sized baskets we found at Target - Sweet!

Here's a link to a previous thread on this topic.  I kept the shelf well away from the curved wall and used plastic snap-top containers that were much cheaper than wicker baskets.

I've used 3M Extreme Mounting Tape in SE Texas (Houston) to mount outdoor lights and worked well there...must be too dry & cool in San Antonio. Wink

I live in Cali now, and just got back from 1st trip with new shelf to Jalama Beach and it worked great, temps 50-75F.  In two weeks I'll be taking the pod for a week of skiing in Mammoth and storing it there for subsequent spring skiing.  We'll see how the tape handles sub-freezing temps, when I store it.

I honestly have not tried it. I like doing things once and I don't see any tape as a permanent mounting solution. Maybe times are changing and this super tape IS the ticket, but I'm not there yet. Smile

I also used 4 strips of 3M Commander Adhesive to mount a full length mirror to the front of the bathroom door and all kinds of hooks picture frames, etc. I have about 4 months and hot and cold trips on it. So far so good. Who knows maybe my world of adhesives will come crashing down around me one day. if so I'll break out the drill and screws

Okay I read through this topic and several others. Two very direct questions:

1. What is the best size screw that can be used in the exterior walls without risking going through the outside wall.

2. How is the valance removed.

Thanks.

The valance is held to the wall by screws directly through the fabric. You will have to search and probe between the folds at the corners and between the trim.

Thanks for responses.  We don't intend on using the baskets, and the shelf looks pretty good just sittling on top of the valance.  We don't plan on keeping much on the shelf other than some towels, sleep ware and such so I think I'm just going to use the command strip approach.  I think it will more than accommodate our needs, and I'll keep an eye on it first few times out.

Actually thinking about it last night I think I'm going to use a combination of command strips and compression. I've got to get a list of my materials first, but it's going to involve a hinge on the center of the shelf which will require some compression against the wall to fully engage.

I'll post pics once I get it together.

Nice Jackwho.

My attempt failed. I cut the shelf in half and added some supporting wood and a hinge. I hoped that when placed between the two walls the downward pressure on the hinge would push against the walls similar to what you've done.

I also thought that hinging the shelf would make it easier to move around.

The problem I encountered is that the wood the shelf is made of is not capable of the stress and cracked in many places.   I haven't totally abandoned the project, but it's unlikely I'm going any further with it.

The damaged shelf and hardware sits in my garage for now...

The valance bears some weight. The set up for the tensioners is like this: 10-32 bolt thru non-skid pad, 10-32 nut tightened down to hold pad at the end of the bolt. End of shelf rails drilled 1/8 pilot 2 1/2" deep, then larger hole to accommodate the bolt diameter. One last drill out to 5/8" depth to set the 10-32 tee nut in the end of the shelf rail. I also put a second nut on each bolt tightened against the tee nut to prevent the tensioners from turning further into the tee nut.

I need a new shower curtain rod for my home and I had the thought to use two curtain rods to span the width over the bed, then rest the shelf on the curtain rods. Any thoughts on a good, or bad idea? I found curtain rods on Amazon that will extend long enough and can support 30 lbs each.

I'm not a fan of any solution that results in putting any force, at all, against the sidewalls. I mean like zero. Smile

Hi all, just wanted to share my results with the shelf mod. The shower curtain and pads worked great. I didn't crank down the rods so there was a lot of pressure and the shelf held well. The valances don't bear any weight, and are attached with small screws. I took the valances off and set the pads on the top edge of the window frame (not pictured). Very sturdy.

Does the shelf and/or the baskets block light from the two ceiling lights over the table?

The shelf is over our bed and it doesn’t block too much light. The shelf is vented which allows for light through the slats.

Where did you buy that shelve? Been all around home Depot with no luck.

I found it at Lowe’s. HD didn’t have anything that would work.

Hello !!!! I am hoping to create this same ventilated shelf of my 171.
The only ventilated wood shelves I can find are 72" but my space is 74.25. Thus, the expanding foot is excellent, however, I can't tell if you have yours on both ends ?

I found the shelf blocked a fair bit of light from the fixture at night so I just put a metal strip under one of the wooden slats and installed a magnetic battery operated led puck light...works great and the AAA batteries last reasonably long Great for reading at night
