Hello. We are looking at 171.
Question: Have owners found best way to retro - fit bed frame so it can be lifted from inside for better storage access?
Thank you. John. Js123Traveller@Gmail.com

Mine came with the ability to lift it from the front as you are standing in front of it, lifting the mattress in the process.  Is that what you meant?

Yes. This 171 has square hole access in front along the floor.

Other than the little area at the front with a cabinet door the rest of the storage under the bed in a 171 is accessed from the two exterior hatches.  Only other thing under the bed is the water heater.

Access is 2 ways from the inside - the front hatch or by lifting the plywood under the mattress.

I had a piano hinge added at the back end of the plywood, and two hydraulic lifters added, one at each end.  I now just apply a little lift to the cover and the lifters do all the work.  Safe Travels.

Just saw this thread .. Our 171 is like JohnBG's:  Under the bed is accessed only via the interior cabinet door or through the exterior hatches.  The ply under the bed is in 2 pieces: big piece and a smaller piece just above the water heater & pump.  Both screwed down.  It's kind of a pain to get to the water heater area, but manageable.

Mine had screws above the water heater too but I removed them and left them out. you can do the same over the other compartment if you want.

You need better access to storage area. I took screws out of plywood, fitted piano hinge at back, drilled a hole near front edge of plywood, put a rope thru hole with plastic 'gaskets' (from bottom of big pop containers) above and below plywood to hold the rope in place, and put a loop in the top end for grabbing the rope. A stick propped in the hole's edge holds it open if I need a prolonged  examination. Works ok, no bulky projections to bother sleeper.
