4. upper bunk support.  This was mandated after my LARGNESS cracked the bunk rail.  reinforced the rail with angle metal support under veneer and added this to support the rail.

5. Dual Propane tanks.  Used 4" angle grinder to remove old tank tray and added the amazon dual holder, double auto-switching manifold, 2 new pigtail hoses that actually bend and don' leak and a cover for 20# and 30# tanks.

9. Window in door.  From Amazon (vintage technologies) $154.   fairly easy install.  Jig saw, masking tape.  Careful on measurements and placement. i make a 3 5/8" jig and used that to get consistent side and top spacing and used the inner frame as the template by mounting it with two screws to the inner door and then marking with a sharpie.

10. Dual batteries and battery cutt-off.  I learned this the hard way and the most expensive way.  Embarrassed
i will tell the tale to hopefully save others by my mistakes.

a. I had a dead battery on the way out of town to boondock(first boondock attempt)
b. I took a picture of the existing dead battery and purchased an exact replacement Group 24 (wrong)
c. new battery failed on boondock and is probably ruined due to excessive drain.  (wont hold charge now)
d. purchased another identical battery thinking that i just needed two group 24s to get by. (wrong)
e. now i have a ruined group 24 and a brand new group 24.  Great.Angry  my fault.
f.  what to do?  Actually read and learn and ask questions to the forum.  Smile
g.  After contemplation of my mess, i decided to deepen the damage and purchase two new 6v 215hr duracells from batteries and bulbs.  i know the duracell are not the cream of the battery world, but after my beating thus far, they fit the budget.  And, BTW, the two of these did not cost much more than i wasted on the two group 24s.
h.  Lesson-when the battery that came with your pod dies, chunk it and get to two 6v in series and a battery disconnect.

I ended up buying 2 x 6" mattresses from Amazon.  Just got them yesterday.  My plan is to use the 6" and the cot mattresses that came with the pod in the bunks.  then, if i need the dinette sleeping as well, i will add the factory cot mattresses to the dinette in addition to the cushions.  Going camping this weekend to Villanueava NM.  Taking my 14 year old daughter to teach her fly fishing. hope to get some good sleep on these new mattresses.

I looked back on my amazon history and is the BAL 28125.  I had to cut the tubes to fit, and drill hole to mount to frame, but not bad.  Be sure and leave enough room for the spare between the tire carrier and the bottom of the Pod.  Mine is tight and if i were to get a bigger size spare i am not sure if it would fit.
holler if you have questions.

For much less than one hour of Camping World labor charges, you could get some nice tools. You could get a Black & Decker corded jigsaw for as low as $19.98 (Item 670173) at Lowe's. You could also go for something like the https://smile.amazon.com/Black-Decker-BDCDMT1206KITC-Matrix-Combo/dp/B00PK4XY90/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1487173169&sr=8-4&keywords=black+and+decker+20v+matrix+drill - Black & Decker Matrix 6 Tool Combo Kit with Case . This would give you an assortment of tools you could use for less than one hour of Camping World labor.

That is a good point that stephenH makes.  Most of the mods are not difficult and do not require many tools.  The window that i used was $154 from amazon and you need the saw stephen describes a drill, bits and a screwdriver to install the window. So for less than $200 you can have a window and keep the tools!Smile

I installed this last night to my dual 6v setup.  I connected as follows:
battery  1 is the 2-6v batteries, battery 2 is to the zamp.  That way i can essentially turn off the pod batteries and switch to 2 and get the full recharge from the solar without the normal drains from the pod devices and i can switch to 1+2 to get a charge and use the pod.  Smile

Do i have a leak or made a newbie mistake?

I arrived to campsite this weekend with two empty propane tanks.Embarrassed  They were both open valves of course and had been that way for the last 2.5 months in storage (without battery).  I was saved by a fellow camper who had a spare tank.  Hooked up and all good, made it two nights and still plenty in the tank.  I checked for leaks, with what i had (soap and water) and didn't find anything.  I know both tanks were full prior to putting the pod in storage.

does the tank valves being open with no battery allow propane to leak?   Or, do i just have a leak?  What is the best way to find a leak?  i added the dual regulator as a mod and replaced the pigtails as well.

Propane should never just leak, even with the valve open, as long as no appliance using propane is turned on or there is no leak anywhere in the system. One way to check is to take some simple dish detergent (Dawn, Palmolive, or whatever brand you have on hand) and mix it with some water. In essence, you are making bubble solution. Using a brush or squirt bottle, put some of that on every fitting. If you see bubbles, then you have a leak. If you don't see bubbles, then there is no leak. I found out about a leaking Blue Rhino tank this way. I was testing the fitting and saw bubbles around where the valve was screwed into the tank. I was not expecting to see bubbles there. Another possibility is that the pigtail is leaking. I had one go bad to where I could hear gas escaping from where the hose itself joined to the connection fitting.

You could get a fancy electronic propane detector and use that instead. The bubble solution is much less expensive and uses what you probably already have on hand.

If you test and can't find a leak, you may wish to have a dealer do a pressure test on the system. That will be able to detect any leaks that might be in places to which you have no access. I believe that there are propane lines running beneath the R-Pod. Leaks could develop there if something hit the line and damaged it.

i am betting heavily on the connections at the regulator installed by yours truly as the point of failure. But that could be it too.  I am actually looking through your escapod mods for the voltage meter that you used. I go through those often BTW.

When you re-did the regulator, did you use the heavier https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B004MYFPAK/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s02?ie=UTF8&psc=1 - yellow teflon tape which is made for gas line connections or some other thread sealant made for gas connections? The white teflon tape is not made for gas. Also, if it has a reverse male flare fitting, that does not get tape as the metal to metal flare seals the connection. The tape is used on NPT connections.
When I re-did mine, I had to use an adapter as the hose had a reverse male flare end and I needed an adapter for the hose to fit it to the regulator. The http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B0056ODEP8/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o09_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 - adapter was female flare on one side and 1/4" NPT on the other side.

This is the one i used. The pigtails i used fit directly into the aluminum body, so i removed the smaller brass fitting and didnt use them.  The bottom supply to the pod is what was from the factory.  I need to check, but i used the pink tape that came with the regulator on the bottom connection to the pod, but did not tape the upper pigtail connections (not sure why now) pigtail photo that i used

I've noticed that it takes a moment or two for the range burners to light when I get to the campsite even if I've been running the fridge on LP, which tells me the system is not gas tight. I do secure the LP - turning g the ta no off at the valve if I'm not using LP.

And I double:che k the tank before leaving.

Okay. I took a look at the regulator's installation instructions. The two small fittings are to adapt 1/4" female NPT to female inverted flare inlet connections. If the pigtail is using male inverted flare, you should have just connected directly. Since you say you removed them, then you are using 1/4" male NPT threads to connect to the female NPT connector on the regulator. You do need to use the appropriate thread sealing compound or tape (for gas, not water) on the NPT threads for them to seal. It is quite likely that since you said you did not use anything on the threads that it was leaking there and it is why you had empty tanks. The leak might not have been bad enough for you to notice when you installed the regulator but even a slow leak will empty a tank.
For your own safety, please re-do the installation with the correct tape or sealant and then check it thoroughly with soapy water afterward to make sure there are no leaks.

Yep, redid it and both pigtails had leaks. I used rectorseal t plus 2 (SDS below)
No leaks after.  The worst leak was at the tank connection of one of the pigtails.  just a tweak with slip joint pliers fixed that.  I am thinking i need to add the spray bottle and soap to my tool set to check that when i change tanks.

RectorSeal® T Plus 2® can be used on a variety of metal and plastic piping including iron, galvanized steel, stainless steel, brass, copper, aluminum, polyethylene, reinforced berglass, PVC, ABS and CPVC including FlowGuard Gold®.*

RectorSeal® T Plus 2® is recommended for pipe carrying:

• Acids, dilute
• Air, compressed
• Aliphatic solvents
• Ammonia, gaseous and liquid • Caustics, dilute
• Cutting oils (low aromatic)
• Heating oils
• Helium, gaseous
• Hydraulic oils
• Hydrogen, gaseous
• Inert gases, gaseous

Not recommended for oxygen.

  • Kerosene

  • Liqui ed petroleum gases (butane, propane, mixtures)

  • Mineral oils

  • Natural gas

  • Nitrogen, gaseous

  • Refrigerants

  • Soap, liquid

  • Vegetable oils

  • Water (hot or cold)

I'm glad you fixed the leaks. That RectorSeal looks to be quite versatile. I agree that having a small bottle of leak testing solution is a good idea. I have not included one, but I think I have a very small spray bottle that would be perfect for the job as it would not take up much space, yet provide me with a way to test for leaks.

mounting of the button for the ignitor

mounting the electrodes.  considered mounting the electrodes to the bottom of the stovetop and hiding the lower part of the electrode, but would require a custom bracket and didn't seem worth the trouble.

this is the back of the sparker.

two small wires on left to electrodes and the heavier 3rd wire is now covered in electrical tape.  all three spark, but this way i did not have to run a ground wire and the 3rd probe is just laying there.

I think i may have successfully posted pics!Star

a few things i would have done different

easy to install, but it takes a few seconds for the propane to "find" the spark sometimes.  I have learned to blow onto the burner to disperse the propane and that seems to work good if it doesn't immediately ignite.  I wonder if there is a point on the burner where the propane is exhausted first and you could put the electrode there. This kit requires a ground if you don't use all three ports on the sparker.  so i figured that i would just plug it in and render it useless with electric tape and save the trouble of grounding it.

also, i may try and tweak the electrode to be lower on the burner and not be in the flame and get red hot. i think this may assist in ignition since propane is heavier than air and would tend to sink until ignited.

from amazon  $20.73 and Prime.  This is the one i used.  It has Three electrodes, so is just taped up the third one and that way you don't have to mount a ground wire.

Hooked up the 2 gallon pressure tank.  It actually holds about a gallon based on the draw from the antifreeze bottle, but i think the rating is output.  The T that you see is where i spliced it in.  1/2" barbed fitting and then i purchased 4 feet of 1/2" line at Lowes and another 1/2" barb to 1/2" and then a 1/2" to 3/4" brass to connect to the tank and hose clamps.  I moved the water pump about 3" to make a little room for the tank to sit on the floor and have added some packing material underneath the tank for shock absorption.  I still need to strap it with plumbers strapping to secure.  It is a bit tight, but stlll room to set the gallon of antifreeze to winterize.   i relieved the factory pressure from the tank.  When i first hooked it up with the factory loaded air pressure, it only sucked about a 1/2 pint and then the pump shut off.  I just bled air until it seemed to draw the gallon and then quit the bleeding.  i still need to check the air pressure.  Note to those that want to do this:  really easy and cheap, but once you start moving those factory fittings and clamps i had two leaks to fix.  One required a new hose clamp and the other just some tightening.

so the water pump does not come on every time you get a drop of water out or the faucet.  The tank allows for some storage of water, but the main purpose is as a "store" of pressure. The tank has a bladder that expands and contracts to keep pressure when you use water in the Pod.  Make sense?

What is a recommendation for an inverter? What size and a good brand.  mainly to run the TV and a CPAP.  I know the cpap amperage is widely variable, but just what others have used that works.  Where have you mounted the inverter?

I don't understand why the two 12 deep cycle didn't charge while driving? Now I'm worried, heading out for first trip, and have replaced the excide battery with 2 sears deep cycle, style 24 in parallel. I was told by the dealer my truck will keep them charged. Is there any way you can show me how to hook up the battery switch you got and where you get it? I think you can email me. Thanks

I have to use a Number bed at home because of 3 back operations. My number is 35 ( soft for dips of hips). I called Number Bed and they said to use 8" Memory foam that is flip able. I got it off Amazon, and laid on it once, and didn't hurt my back. I took the bottom bunk mattress and put it on top to the top rack. Wasn't cheep, but you have to be comfortable. Now draw back, cant lift the bed very high go get to storage. I like the idea of roll out drawer. use a stick to hold bed up while getting into the corners.

the truck may charge some, depends on the truck and the setup.  You do not want to rely on the truck to get your batteries to a full "state of charge".  You want the Pod plugged in to shore power to get the proper charge or a battery charger.  Are you running the fridge off of batteries while driving?  you dont want to do that.

The switch is from Amazon

I have a battery charger on them now, and after 30min went to full charge, left on 5 amp overnight. No, I plan on using gas for frig. from Charleston to Perry GA. ( 6hrs max) if I have to, then change over to shore power then go shoping while frig is getting cold. (GA fairgrounds, stores near) ,. I don't know how the charge is kept on the battery,(not that far in the book) but do have 2 solar units that I can run. (again haven't read that far) Still trying to basics like Twin bed, sheets, caulks, hoses with fittings. Got to two battery boxes and batteries ( gel type). Got a quick disconnect for the batteries, but not a switch that you are talking about. Again, can you tell me how to hook it up, if will find it on amazon. don't know how to get an email of a diagram? Thanks for your help. I figured out how to the Iball, and back up under hitch, now for how to back the trailer with the same unit. like I said first time, but this battery thing has thrown me.

Reasons why the batteries may not have charged:
1. If you were running the refrigerator on 12V while driving, the power required for that may have meant that there was not sufficient left over to charge the batteries. Cure: Run refrigerator on gas while moving and on AC when connected to shore power.
2. Charging wire of insufficient gauge to carry enough current to charge the batteries. 10 gauge wire is the smallest size that should be used. If available, 8 gauge would be better.
3. Alternator is not putting out sufficient Amperage to meet the needs of both the truck and the R-Pod.
4. Despite dealer's assurance, the 12V supply to the trailer might have a problem. Use a good digital voltmeter to check the trailer connector to see if it has 12V power. There could be a blown or missing fuse.

Check this diagram for the pinout on the https://goo.gl/images/VLBC7k - Bargman Connector . Use the #4 and #1 connections to check.

Thanks, I'll check, but think it is 10 gauge. As for alternator, don't know, We do know it can take care of 1995 F150 6 and the original Pod's excide. Before any alterations, need to check on that. I know it is 1 yr old life time warranty
Again, thanks for your help, Ill look up the switch and maybe there is a schematic of how to hook it up.

This is for parallel not series.  this is to isolate the solar from the pod. do, if switch is on 2, you can only charge the batteries and the pod is off, no drain.  1 and 2 pod and zamp both.  off is all off, batteries isolated.

TexMan, I'm looking to get a 182G in the next few months and was wondering if you have heard any pro or cons on the Gray Tank drain mod?  It looks pretty easy and having just one hose connection location would be great. Any issues with the gray water not properly draining after the mod? Thanks and love all your great Mods! Tony

Alloy

i just did the mod and haven't used it.  I added a cleanout for the gray line at the 90 deg turn, if you can see it. The cleanout was a recommendation of the person that i stole this from to wash the line out of food and such.  Not sure if you can tell from the photos, but the line i added to connect the tanks does have decent fall to it, about 2" over 6.5 feet, so that should drain good.

Installed this 300watt inverter last night.  Ran the included leads direct to the battery connections on the power block. Had an open slot for the positive and slid the negative in with the existing.  two small holes and three screws to mount.  I would have preferred to have the inverter mounted behind the wall in the cavity, but i don't want it on all the time and did not want to extend the plug and have another plate.  This model fits perfectly in the storage area right above the power unit. The unit is mainly for an air mattress that draws 105 watts that will be the bed in the front when we squeeze four of us in the pod for a grand canyon trip this summer sometime and the TV if needed.  I may need it for the father in laws CPAP as well.  I don't plan to use it much and so if it gets covered up with "stuff" it wont get hot that way.  when we need it, it is handy and really unseen.  I went with the pure sine wave model to be safe on electronics.

making progress on the side table.  Thanks to John and Sue for this idea.  The 182g internal framing is a real challenge when trying to do this mod.  I used a 1" aluminum tubing for my trailer and shelf attachment piece for strength since i only have three attachment point to the trailer over 83".  I used 1/4" nut inserts into the pod at these points.  Also- apparently the studs in the walls are of an s shape.  i cant tell.  But the studfinder and the exterior moisture test revealed studs, but a 1/8" test hole was contraindicated, to say the obvious.  i was glad i drilled very small test holes to verify the stud location before the big 13/32" bore.

The table is made from redwood 2x6 cut into 3/4" pieces and biscuit joined.  a buddy planed it for me and the side you see is the ugly side that needs a little sanding.  The top looks much better.  started staining last night.  The table is exactly 12" wide and 80.5" long.  it fits under the window trim with about a 1/8" to spare.

My plan is to support the table by using some of the 1.5" redwood strips that diagonal from the outer edge to the c channel at the bottom of the pod.  The way the studs worked out, i have to go below, because of the handle on the door.

We made a trip with the new table over the weekend.  I was really surprised at how handy that thing is.  We used it for so many different things.  It is a 2x6 redwood ripped to 3/4" and biscuit joined.  The 182g has exactly 13" from the top of the fender to the bottom of the rear window.  The table is 12" wide mounted to 1" square aluminum mounted to the pod with 3x 1/4" nutserts into the studs. The latch is a SS anti rattle boat latch mounted to another 1" aluminum tubing mounted to pod with same size nutsert. I used redwood to support the table the rests on the keder rail very nicely.  The closed travel position is shown and i am still trying to figure out a good way to secure the legs while traveling.  The rubber wire ties work but arent the most stylish. i still need to do some touch up stain and seal on the legs. I used timber stain and spar varnish.

Guys, got a question. First I have my pants on, (YOUR KILLING ME LOL), I was told by Forest River If I modify my 172, I would void the warranty. I want to put up a clothes hanger rod above the table, and a 6" x 6" square PVC pipe for an extra Black water hose. I also want to try putting in a drawer under the front bunk, and under the bench at the table. I have a hard time getting the cushions up and out of the way to get to the little storage area. I was going to put a Formica backsplash behind the sink and stove that would allow suction cup hangers, and one in the shower for shaving mirror, and razor. I'm afraid to put up a paper towel holder. Also checked into the WIFI Ranger, and want to run the cable down the air conditioner. Can that be done?
Thanks for any help.

To me, it depends on what you think the warranty is worth. I don't even remember what the FR warr is. I have a 2015 model so I'm sure I don't have any remaining warr. When the pod was brand new I didn't do any mods or very minor ones. Now that I have had it awhile , the mods are fun and make the pod even better. After the first year and no major appliance failures or frame and shell failures, I didn't even think about a voided warr. Now if it fails I fix it. But, I can do whatever I want to make it better. Hth

And you can take ur pants off and not void the warranty as well.

This is the funniest thread I've ever heard. LOL. I paid for extra 1 year warrenty. Air/heat, refer, and plumbing I was worried about. In the 172 there is almost no accessible storage. I have gotten the front bunk ready for a slide out drawer, and beefed it up for my 245 LB body. Made a removable CPAP machine shelf over my head. I've purchased the Cig. lighter, usb charger, and a voltmeter to be installed when I can. I did add that second 12 volt battery, (two of the same from sears). When I talked to Forest R. she said use the 3m removable two side tape. That will be about imposable to use as a backsplash that I can us suction cups/Hooks on. But the neat one is the 6x6 pvc square pipe for extra drain pipe. I think what Ill do is put it on the rear bumper. I have set up a backup camera with a magnet to put on the spare tire rim. (only draw back is removing the tire cover to get to the center of the tire. I purchased a 8" Memory foam mattress for my back (3 operations) and it was a mistake. Going to try a 8" air mattress. If anyone needs a twin Memory, let me know. Later TexMan. OH, I will be going to KS in a month or two and maybe down to Texas with the Cushman Scooter Club of America.

i would do what you want to the pod and not worry about it.   If they deny warranty for your a/c because you put a shelf and a usb charger in, then they will probably deny it anyway. Ying YangBring your wdh and sway bars for texas and kansas travel for sure, especially the sway bars.   And if you look at the pants picture, hers were off too! Big smile

these are not mods, real repairs for that stupid piece of trim under the fridgeThumbs Down, but really a bad design.  The rear kitchen problem i have is from leaking aerosol can of mosquito spray, i am convinced that it deformed that counter top and i know it ate a hole in the sink knob.  I may get some stick on backsplash for back there too.

Rear kitchen aluminum strip and silicone
crappy trim will stay there now i bet!
latch on the table closeup.
rear kitchen storage.  i have had this thing over two years and just started using it, it is great!

The next mod is an outdoor shower for the wife.  Hey, i wont complain at all.  The great thing about the 182g is that it comes with a quickconnect for the sink and a hose and spray head ready to go.  All i need is a curtain and a comfortable mat.  i am thinking of using some leftover redwood to make a mat and attach a curtain to the kitchen fiberglass door.  Should make a nice shower for two. Evil Smile

Never happened to me, yet.  Seems like i read somewhere the thermostat has to be set on AUX, but not sure.  My furnace is only used boondocking so far, so the a/c cant run.  I know i saw a post here about that a/c fan and the furnace.
