I am going to install an inverter in my 180 mostly to power my cpap machine.  My question is, do I need to spend the money for a true sinewave , or will a modified sinewave work?

I can't answer your question completely since it probably depends on the CPAP. However, many CPAPs actually run on DC. Is there a small adapter between the wall socket and the CPAP? If so, what is its output rating? A direct 12V plug or small DC/DC inverter may  be a better solution.

Charlie is, of course, correct. I've been using my CPAP (two different machines) for a number of years on 12 volt. My latest model: A https://www.cpap.com/productpage/resmed-airsense-10-autoset-humidair.html - ResMed AirSense 10 works great with 12 volt adapter and sips amps without running humidifier. I found that filling the water chamber with warm distilled water right before bedtime is almost as good as running humidifier all night. It is also very quiet except when Henry (the camping cat) tries to pull it off of me in the morning when he wants breakfast - he really does.

My cpap has an output of 80 watts,  6.67a at 12 volts.

looks like I just need a 12v adapter/cord.

thanx

Sounds like mine. The wattage listing is for running with the humidifier. If you don't run the humidifier, the actual power draw is much less. I just looked at mine, and the 80 watts is if you are using the heated tubing. 60 watts is for when you are using non-heated tubing. If you have a problem with "rain out" like i did, get a cover for the tubing. My wife made me a cover out of fleece fabric. It is essentially a tube with elastic on each end that will fit over the tubing and rubber ends. The elastic holds it in place. Just having that layer of fabric prevents the condensation in the tube. Before she did that for me, I was getting a nose full of water from the condensation. Now, I have no problems. These can be bought, but I have spent thousands of dollars on sewing equipment for my wife. We might as well get some use out of it. Smile

My power pack is 67W 12V, so I got a 12V cord and have used it for several nights with no problem at all.

Hi Fred,

I've been trying to figure out how to do this with exactly the CPAP you're using.  Can you please tell me how you hook up that adapter?  Do you connect it to the battery outside and then slam to door on the cord?  That sounds awful for the door but I can't think of another way.

Thanks for any suggestions you might have.

I added a cigarette lighter socket inside the Pod and just plug it in there. I used one of the spare circuits in the fuse box, which also drives our inverter.

I also added 12V power outlets (no cigarette lighters) to our RPod. I tapped into the antenna booster cable for the one that runs my CPAP (and occasionally, a small inverter for the television) and the furnace power line for the other. Since the gauge of the wire leading to the furnace is adequate, I changed the fuse in the panel for the furnace to a higher amperage one and have a lower amperage one in a fuse holder leading to the outlet. I also run an O2 Cool fan that sits at the base of the bed to help circulate the hot air from the furnace as needed or provide additional ventilation if we are dry camping and want some air circulation.
