Topic: Door grab bar lockout Posted: 25 Mar 2018 at 11:16pm |
Anyone trimmed bar holder to allow “push” leverage to defeat prank lock-in?
If so how much trimmed and what angle?
Thx, Henry

You can't be locked in with them, a simple push of the door from the inside will open it for you.

I just tested my 2017 R-Pod door latch and discovered the prank lock-in problem is a real issue on my trailer. With the bar closed I was unable to open my door from the inside. It was a 5-minute job with a Dremel tool grinder wheel to fix it. You could also use a hand file since the parts are just plastic.
Just trim down the bottom corner of the upper and lower bar mounts so the bar rises up easier to unlock when you pull it open. It's pretty obvious what needs to be done when you look at it closely. I only needed to trim down the corners about 1/16" to make it work right so opening the trailer door easily pushes the bar open.
I suspect that this may not be an issue with all R-Pods, since it depends on how each individual bar mount was trimmed at the factory. R-Pod quality control is only a little better than most RV's, not by any means perfect - so, test yours.
News about how to do pranks spreads quickly among teen-agers on social media, so it's worth checking before you get pranked and locked inside.
(If anyone at the R-Pod factory is reading this, lock-in could be a major safety issue so I recommend you put it on your quality control checklist.)
Hope this is helpful. Let me know if you need any more info.

Interesting. I shut door today, moved assist handle against door, and was able to open from outside with a tug., the assist handle offered some resistance but not enough to prevent opening. Agree if it doesn't do that address, but mine doesn't do that.

This was a bit of internet wisdom from a few years ago. Ours pops right open, and I have never found anyone trapped inside.

So I tried it from the outside and also inside.
I’m convinced that the angle of the pressure makes a difference as I could open it from the outside but NOT from the inside !!!

This thread is the first I've ever heard of anyone actually not being able to open the door with the grab bar across it. And this subject comes up fairly regularly. I certainly can't argue with you, but I suspect you might not be trying hard enough! If you and Purkey really can't open your doors it's a new situation for RPods.

I pushed as hard as I could on the door (and I’m a pretty big guy) but there was no way it would open with the grab bar across it. As I said, it was a 5-minute job with a Dremel tool to get it to work right. Now it opens easily. So, again, make sure you test yours. Some will work OK, others like mine will not. Good luck!
