2015 RP-178 Shelf Over Bed w/ Baskets Mod

Okay I read through this topic and several others. Two very direct questions:

1. What is the best size screw that can be used in the exterior walls without risking going through the outside wall.

2. How is the valance removed.

Thanks for responses.  We don't intend on using the baskets, and the shelf looks pretty good just sittling on top of the valance.  We don't plan on keeping much on the shelf other than some towels, sleep ware and such so I think I'm just going to use the command strip approach.  I think it will more than accommodate our needs, and I'll keep an eye on it first few times out.

Actually thinking about it last night I think I'm going to use a combination of command strips and compression. I've got to get a list of my materials first, but it's going to involve a hinge on the center of the shelf which will require some compression against the wall to fully engage.

I'll post pics once I get it together.

My attempt failed. I cut the shelf in half and added some supporting wood and a hinge. I hoped that when placed between the two walls the downward pressure on the hinge would push against the walls similar to what you've done.

I also thought that hinging the shelf would make it easier to move around.

The problem I encountered is that the wood the shelf is made of is not capable of the stress and cracked in many places.   I haven't totally abandoned the project, but it's unlikely I'm going any further with it.

The damaged shelf and hardware sits in my garage for now...
